The BEST Hair Care Routine – All Natural & Affordable

In this blog post I want to share the affordable and all natural hair care routine that saved my hair. My hair is twice as thick as it once was, my hair grows much faster, and my scalp feels healthier. Instead of using liquid shampoo and conditioner, I opt for solid shampoo and conditioner bars.

I can’t even count the number of people who have said “Oh my gosh, your hair has gotten so long” since I started using shampoo and conditioner bars.

I purchase mine off of Etsy from the shops IndigoMoonApothecary and Emily’s Homestead

If you purchase a shampoo bar from somewhere else be sure the ingredient label does not list sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Both of these are used in conventional soaps and shampoos to make the products suds up. They also strip the hair of its natural oils which causes weak hair that is prone to breakage.

This post is a bit lengthy but it is only because I have so much information and so many tips when it comes to these bars!

Shampoo Bars

The shampoo bars are comparable to most bars of soap. They lather up very nicely and get relatively sudsy. Not as sudsy as a shampoo with sulfates in it, but more sudsy than most natural liquid shampoos that I have tried.

These shampoo bars can be lathered up on the scalp/hair or in the hands. I have found that with all natural shampoos (including shampoo bars) that I have to spend an extra minute or two lathering the product in my hair to get my hair clean.

Pictured below is the Rosemary Mint Beer and Aloe Shampoo Bar from Emily’s Homestead. (Not currently available but it will most likely be restocked at some point).

After rinsing out the shampoo the hair will feel a little bit gritty and almost like it is too clean, however, I have found that after my hair drys that it feels clean, soft, and not gritty at all.

In my experience all natural liquid soap tends to be a little bit more drying than natural solid bar soap. Since I started using a shampoo bar to wash my hair I find that whenever I use a liquid shampoo in my hair for a long period of time my hair starts to feel weak, limp, and dried out.

I could go on about these shampoo bars but basically I think that everyone should at least try these out, and if you have thin, fine, or limp hair then using a good shampoo bar just might transform your hair like it did mine.

Now I’ll get into the conditioner bar from IndigoMoonApothecary, this bar is the bee’s knees.

Conditioner Bar

This conditioner bar is full of beneficial oils and butters that penetrate the hair strands leaving the hair soft and less prone to breakage. Conventional conditioners use silicones to coat the hair strands with a silky feeling film which makes the hair feel like it is being nourished when it is not.

I have found that using this conditioner bar after washing my hair repairs any damage done to my hair from heat styling. This has helped my hair grow longer and stronger than ever.

Before & After

First picture was taken about two months before I started using shampoo and conditioner bars. The second picture was taken about a year and a half after I began using shampoo and conditioner bars. I also had a couple of inches cut off about a year after the first picture was taken (for styling purposes, not because of breakage or unhealthy ends) so the second photo doesn’t quite do the bars justice as far as hair growth goes.

After using the shampoo bar I use controlled strokes to slide the conditioner bar from my roots down to the ends of my hair.

The conditioner bar does not suds up like the shampoo bar and has a very slippery silky feeling. I let the conditioner sit in my hair for as long as possible.

This bar is comparable to a deep conditioner so it is important to rinse the product out as thoroughly as possible to make sure that there is no oily residue left in the hair. I usually rinse it out for an extra minute or so than I would any other conditioner and find that it all comes out just fine. Immediately after rinsing the conditioner out, the hair will feel incredibly silky and soft.

I have pretty fine and strait hair and I do not find that this conditioner bar weighs my hair down at all. I think that this conditioner bar would be especially useful to those with thick, curly, or coarse hair because it is so moisturizing and does an excellent job at getting tangles out of the hair.

The shampoo bars work lovely as body bars and the condition bar is also great to use on the skin as a lotion bar, it leaves the skin feeling so moisturized and smooth!

Thanks stopping by Paige’s Page!

Have a fabulous day and feel free to leave any questions about the shampoo and conditioner bars 🙂

Note: If you are switching from a conventional shampoo (especially one with sulfates) your scalp may be used to over producing oil to compensate for the stripping of natural oils from the shampoo. The scalp may over produce oil out of habit for the first couple of weeks after switching to the shampoo bar. This will go away after a while. The Acure Organics shampoos and diluted Dr. Bronners Castille Soap work very well as an all natural transition shampoo to the shampoo bar. Natural liquid soap is usually just a little bit more drying than bar soap so this shampoo should keep the over production of oil under control but should not continue to strip the hair of its natural oils which should help break the cycle of the scalp overproducing oil.
