The Ordinary’s 2% Salicylic Acid mask is an excellent treatment option for anyone looking to lightly exfoliate the skin, control excess oil, and cleanse the pores.
Salicylic acid is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid). BHA’s exfoliate the inside of the pore; opposed to AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) which exfoliate the surface of the skin. The Ordinary’s SA (salicylic acid) mask also contains kaolin clay to help degrease the skin for maximum penetration of the the salicylic acid.
SA’s pore-purifying properties make it especially helpful for controlling acne. It is also hydrating and anti-inflammatory.
In my opinion the only skin types that should consider avoiding salicylic acid are those with skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis, and dermatitis; as these skin conditions can be triggered by exfoliating treatments. These individuals should use exfoliating treatments with caution, research which active ingredients are safe for their skin condition, and consider consulting a dermatologist before using. Those with an allergy to aspirin should also avoid salicylic acid.
Always apply this mask to clean and dry skin. For best results consider using an astringent or degreasing toner before use such as Thayers Alcohol Free Witch Hazel Toner or PCA Skin’s Degreasing Toner.
My 1.7 fluid ounce ($7.90) Salicylic Acid mask lasted about 8 months with my boyfriend and I both using it anywhere from 1-4 times a month.
