My MIAKODA Wishlist – Ethical Fashion

I’m super excited to share this post on my blog today!

My current obsessions are natural make up and holistic skincare and wellness but what some people might not know about me is that my first beauty related love was fashion.

Over the last couple of years I have tried to live more mindfully, more consciously, and with more intention. Two years ago I started reading more about the harsh reality of the fast fashion world, and was introduced to to the concept of Ethical Fashion, also referred to as Slow Fashion.

Slow Fashion/Ethical Fashion can mean many different things. Most often though it means that a brand creates apparel goods that are produced responsibly in regards to the environment and/or that the goods were produced in a facility where the employees are treated well and paid a liveable wage. Basically these are brands that are anti sweat shop and eco friendly. As I am writing this, I am thinking to myself how much more there is to say about if a brand is truly ethical, so maybe my next fashion related post will be something a long the lines of, ‘How To Research Ethical Fashion Brands’? Ha, that’s a working title if I’ve ever heard one, just throwing the idea out there.

So lets jump on into one of my ethical fashion muses.

MIAKODA NEW YORK is one of my favorite websites to browse. I love the laid back and simplistic approach they have in regards to fashion. Miakoda was founded by sisters, Laura and Julia. Laura’s passion and background as a yoga instructor has been one of the driving forces behind Miakoda as an ethical and mindful fashion brand. Julia has an education and a background in fashion design and is described as a “shopaholic turned sustainable lifestyler vegan yogi.” Love it. All of Miakoda’s pieces are made ethically and and with sustainable practice in New York.

Organic Cotton Leggings from MIAKODA

I am a firm believer that leggings are in fact, pants. I wear leggings all of the time. Lazy days, running errands, dressed up for work or an outing, they’re what I feel most comfortable in, most attractive in, and most like myself in. So I know that I would get a lot of use out of these and that they would be a ‘treat yo self’ item that I would enjoy at least a couple of times a week. I have also heard from other bloggers that these leggings are just a bit thicker in material than other leggings which is something that I always look for in leggings because there is nothing more awkward than the skin on your bum showing through your leggings when you bend over.

Moving on to another comfy fashion staple, bralettes.

Also made of organic cotton, The Bustier Bralette by Miakoda is another ethically made item that I have had my eye on for quite some time. Vegan and cruelty free lifestyle blogger Rhian says that this bralette feels like it is made from an old t-shirt. Need I say anymore about why I would love to add this bralette to my closet? Like I said earlier, I feel my best when I wear leggings over any other type of pants and the same goes for bralettes. The only time I will ever wear an underwire/padded bra is if all of my bralettes are being washed or if the top or dress that I am wearing is better suited with a padded bra underneath. I also am completely infatuated with this light shade of grey in all areas of my life. The pale grey detailing on my blog is the one part of the design of my blog that I am completely attached to.

Next up is a super comfy looking oversized zip up hoodie. Miakoda’s ‘The Hoodie’

This would be the ultimate lazy day attire. I also think that it would be super cute to throw on over a slouchy tee and some leggings for running errands. Personally I would dress an outfit like that up with some cute flats or a TOMS like pair of shoes, but you could also make the outfit a bit sportier with some sneakers, or a bit warmer with a pair of boots or booties. I realize that this piece might be a bit too slouchy for some but I personally love how unique it is and how it really can be dressed up or dressed down.

Another comfy and sleek looking piece from Miakoda that I would love to have in my closet is The Slim Fit Jogger. This pant comes in black, white, rust (looks like a bright orange), and in a beautiful wine color.

I know that the black would be super versatile and just a bit more likely to go with everything but I personally would lean more towards the wine shade. I feel like wine colors and burgundy colors fall into the category of ‘secondary neutrals’. Black, white, grey, brown – those are your neutrals, and colors like earthy olive greens, navy, and burgundies are nearly just as versatile as the above mentioned true neutrals (if you will) but can also act as subtle pops of color which is why I like to refer to them as secondary neutrals.

I love the fit of these joggers and, from what I can see in the pictures on Miakoda’s website, they look like they would have the perfect amount of thickness to them while still feeling lightweight. They are made of bamboo (the rust color consists of soy instead of bamboo), organic cotton, and spandex which makes me think that they would be incredibly soft but have just enough stretch to them.

After seeing some pieces from Miakoda New York I’m sure everyone can tell that they cater to a very laid back style, but I love how they keep all of their pieces very sleek looking as well.

What are your favorite ethical fashion brands? I have to be honest, I haven’t bought from many ethical fashion brands (I’ve stuck to buying mostly second hand in attempt to contribute less to the unethical and not so environmentally friendly practices of the fast fashion world) but I have been browsing so many amazing and responsibly made clothing sites for a while now and would love to hear anyone else’s thoughts on some ethically made pieces that they have purchased.
